Race for the Cure: What it means to Labconco

On August 11, 2013, many Labconco employees and their loved ones made their personal contributions to the battle against cancer by participating in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in Kansas City. Some supported the cause by participating in the race, others by sponsoring runners or by volunteering to man a water station along the race route.

2013 marks Labconco's 3rd year of sponsoring the Race for the Cure, a cause which touches so many lives everywhere. Some of our team members shared their personal stories as well, a demonstration of the fact that everyone has been affected by this disease in one way or another. It's a common thread that we all share. 

Jennifer Hubbard, Engineering- Administrative Assistant, was a Team Labconco race participant and shared what the Race for the Cure means to her family:

"Race for the Cure is a great experience that my younger daughter and I share each year. Not only does it promote fitness, it is for an extraordinary cause that is close to my heart. After watching my mother fight through and unfortunately lose her battle to breast cancer, it is something I pray that my two daughters and I never have to go through. I hope I live to see the day we finally find the cure."

Nancy Simonds, Marketing Communications-Sales Promotion Coordinator, was a Team Labconco water station volunteer and also shared:

"My mom had just had her annual exam and was told everything was fine, when one day shortly thereafter, she found multiple lumps in one of her breasts. She called the doctor immediately and was seen by him the very next day. They discovered that she had 11 lumps that all tested positive for cancer. They removed her breast, and after numerous treatments, including some experimental drugs, mom recovered. If there is a more important reason to do self-exams I don't know what it could be. Thanks to many doctors and mom's fortitude, she lived to see forty more years."

We are at our best when we fight together, and we all should be willing to join in this fight for a cure. Labconco will continue to come together as a community, to join the fight against breast cancer, and offer our assistance in any way we can!
