Labconco LEED Products Measure Up

As a member of the United States Green Building Council (USGBC), Labconco is committed to designing products that are environmentally responsible. The USGBC LEED® 2009 rating system recognizes performance in seven key areas sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, indoor environmental quality, innovation in design and regional priority.

Below are the specific areas that Labconco products contribute to LEED points.

EA Credit 1: Optimize Energy Performance

Buildings of new construction or with major renovations may earn LEED points for reducing the environmental and economic impact associated with excessive energy use.

For example, new construction buildings can earn from one point for a 12% energy use reduction up to a possible 19 points for a 48% energy use reduction. Two Labconco products, the Protector XStream Laboratory Hood and the Purifier Logic Biosafety Cabinet, contribute to energy conservation.

The Protector XStream Laboratory Hood is a high performance fume hood that is capable of operating as low as 60 fpm while maintaining containment. When compared to traditional fume hoods that operate at 100 fpm, a Protector XStream Hoods may save up to 40% of the tempered air exhausted from it.

The Purifier Logic and Cell Logic Biosafety Cabinets utilize ECM technology. The ECM consumes 60% less energy than conventional motors. Their unique design also lowers the heat load on the building compared to other biological safety cabinets.

For example, 4' Purifier Logic Biosafety Cabinet has a heat load of 990 BTU/hour compared to 1986 BTU/hour generated by a biosafety cabinet with a conventional motor.

MR Credit 4: Recycled Content

Buildings that incorporate recycled materials reduce the environmental impact of extracting and processing virgin materials. Up to two points may be awarded if a building shows that its recycled content of its permanently installed materials is at least 10% (1 point) or 20% (2 points).

Labconco fume hoods and Purifier Logic and Cell Logic Biosafety Cabinets comply with these requirements. Our fume hoods contain about 40% recycled materials and our biological safety cabinets about 54%.

MR Credit 5: Regional Materials

Labconco's manufacturing facilities are located in or near Kansas City. Building project sites within 500 miles of our locations are eligible to earn up to two LEED points.

ID Credit 1: Innovation in Design

Projects can earn "extra credit" for any of the above areas for exemplary performance. One point may be awarded for each area. In addition to the fume hoods and biological safety cabinets mentioned above, the FlaskScrubber and SteamScrubber Laboratory Glassware Washers can be considered for a credit for non-regulated water use.
